Everything You Need To Know About The Smoke Wear x Lovebirds Collab

August 20, 2020 Our sartorial choices have and will always reflect the zeitgeist. Considering the outside world is scary, hostile, ambiguous and ever-changing with a global pandemic on our hands, we tend to lean more towards a cushioned and familiar aesthetic – pieces that coddle us in the quietest of ways and feel light on the skin instead of sharp edges, frills, extra layering and unnecessary drama, and hey, if it’s eco friendly, even better. You’d notice that you might have even shifted to a uniform of sorts: oversized silhouettes, a monotone palette and fuss-free separates. Keeping these thoughts in mind, this latest eco-conscious collab born during lockdown ticks all the right boxes.

In an unexpected and interesting pairing, streetwear label Smoke Wear has joined forces with indie favourite duo Gursi Singh and Amrita Khanna’s RTW label Lovebirds (known for their minimal and modern yet playful style) to create an upcycled apparel collection. Bringing together Smoke Wear’s stark monochromatic approach and the whimsical yet clean sensibility of Lovebirds, the gender-fluid capsule collection includes relaxed tailoring, oversized polka dots and handwoven denim.

The panelled blocks on their jackets are crafted of upcycled handloom fabric while checkered co-ord sets are made from a regenerated fabric which is developed from the waste scrap fabric collected from Lovebirds studio and then hand woven into an intricate, delicate and purely upcycled fabric.

Highly functional and wearable, either as sets or separates from oversized shirts with stitch line detailing, long line jackets with sports style drawtrings to relaxed floaty dresses and tailored Mom shorts, the pieces make for chic comfort dressing at it’s best while reimagining the idea of eco-conscious fashion.

“It is vital for us that we tell our story of Smoke Wear using a diverse set f voices and this story in collaboration with Lovebirds in these uncertain times is about embracing our time today. We are constantly adapting and negotating with the world around us, and we built this collection around this striking moment when we are going through an uncertain time with limited resources at hand. It is now we have to experiment with our materials and methods, and still deliver an unflinching definition of luxe combined with functionality,” shares Sanya V Jain, Creative Director of Smoke Wear on the collaboration.

“The idea was to create a collection that was not just around the principles of sustainability but literally from it. These testing times led to this construction of all-organic cotton pieces, hand picked, hand-woven and hand-dyed from a sustainable pool of fashionable waste using zero chemicals. Dominantly denim, this collection is comfortably androgynous for every fender of youthful spirit,” add Gursi Singh and Amrita Khanna of Lovebirds.
